The critically-acclaimed contemporary drama series Queen Sugar will return this May on OWN, with a heavy emphasis on the “journey of fatherhood,” Deadline reports. Executively produced by Ava DuVernay and Oprah Winfrey, Queen Sugar tells the story of the estranged Bordelon siblings, who are all dealing with their own complexities as they attempt to restart their lives on an inherited Louisiana farm.
Last season concluded with the shocking revelation that Ralph Angel may not be the father of Blue, his presumed son with Darla. In season three, this entangled storyline will be a primary focal point. We will discover how Ralph Angel copes with the chance of not being the biological father of the son he loves and adores, and we can also expect an official paternity test before the season’s end. At PaleyFest, the series’ new showrunner Kat Candler said that she’s “excited about just watching the complexities of that relationship unfold.”
At PaleyFest, the concept of the inclusion rider became a main topic of discussion for the Queen Sugar crew. The inclusion rider is a contract clause that states the cast and crew “looks inclusive and reflects the real world,” DuVernay explained, while noting that inclusivity has never been an issue with the series. “Luckily we’re on OWN, and everything that we do, from the offices to our sets, really reflects different kinds of cultures,” she said. Furthermore, DuVernay ensures that women are constantly included and at the forefront, resulting in Queen Sugar being entirely female-directed.
Queen Sugar stars Kofi Siriboe, Rutina Wesley, Dawn-Lyen Gardner, Tina Lifford, Omar Dorsey, Bianca Lawson, and Dondre Whitfield. Season 3 will kick off on OWN as a two-part series premiere on May 29th and May 30th.
