The upcoming indie urban drama Pimp has landed a teaser trailer. The film is the first movie that Lee Daniels (Empire, Precious, and The Butler) has executive produced. His involvement in the film, as reported by THR, comes from “wanting to support a new generation of filmmakers with authentic voices and a unique approach to storytelling.”
Pimp was written and directed by Christine Crokos, and stars Keke Palmer, Vanessa Morgan, Aunjanue Ellis, DMX, Haley Ramm, and Mike E. Winfield.
Taking place on the ruthless streets of the Bronx, Pimp focuses on Wednesday (Palmer), who has been born into the tenacious world of hustling, where she acquired the game of the streets from her dad (DMX). After her father leaves, Wednesday must take care of her mother (Ellis) and girlfriend Nikki (Ramm). Desperate for money, Nikki takes to the streets in order to help Wednesday financially and create their dream life. Yet, in the vicious fight for survival, Wednesday comes head-on with a pimp (Gathegi) who plays a more treacherous game, leaving Wednesday to fight for love and put everything on the line to save her girlfriend, Nikki.
As of now, no release date has been set for the film. Palmer, who was the first to post the 30-second teaser trailer via Instagram, expressed her excitement for the film. She began working on the film at the age of 18. Now, seven years later, Palmer is thrilled for the world to see the end result. “Sometimes things take time, but art is all about the passion/persistence you have in telling the stories that make you feel something, especially the stories of humanity that are often left untold or half told,” she wrote on Instagram. Additionally, Palmer revealed that she also helped produce the film, and it marks the first feature that she’s ever produced. Watch the teaser trailer for Pimp below:
