In June of this year, Matthew A. Cherry signed a major multi-year deal with Warner Bros Television to develop comedies, dramas, and event series with the studio. Now, we’ve been informed about the first series that will be part of this deal: Young Love.
Created by Cherry, Young Love is a 2D-animated series that features the characters from his 2019 Oscar-winning short film Hair Love. In Young Love, viewers will become far more acquainted with the delightful Young family, who we only briefly met in the short film. It focuses on Black millennial parents Stephen and Angela, their daughter Zuri, and her pet cat Rocky. We’ll watch as they adapt to life’s typical challenges of juggling their careers, marriage, and parenthood, while also navigating current social issues and multi-generational dynamics.
HBO Max will be the distributor of the project, and has ordered a 12-episode season. Carl Jones, most prominently known for his production and voiceover work on The Boondocks, will serve alongside Cherry as a showrunner. Monica A. Young, producer of Hair Love, will executive produce the series with Carl Reed and David Steward II.
“I am beyond excited to continue telling the story of Stephen, Angela and Zuri and further explore the family dynamics of a young Black millennial family we established in our short film Hair Love as an animated series,” Cherry told Deadline. “Couldn’t ask for better partners in Sony Pictures Animation and HBO Max in helping us get Young Love out to the world.”
