Throughout the decades, there have been a multitude of deeply impactful series and films that detail the life of activist Malcolm X. The latest project, however, will have a more personal touch as it is set to be led by his daughter, Ilyasah Shabazz.
The upcoming television series will be influenced from the books X: A Novel, and The Awakening of Malcolm X, which Shabazz co-wrote. The series is described as Malcolm X’s coming-of-age story, and it will follow the transformative years of his life–– his father’s traumatic lynching, the institutionalization of his mother, his crime-filled teenage years which led him to being incarcerated in his twenties, and how ultimately he found the weight of faith which propelled him towards his monumental life purpose.
Shabazz will executive produce the project alongside George Tillman, Bob Tietel, and Jay Marcus. The series is a part of Sony Pictures Television’s TriStar.
