A Bit of Black Film History

The first black short film was “Dirty Gertie from Harlem U.S.A.” which was released in 1946. It was directed by Spencer Williams and starred Francine Everett. The film was groundbreaking at the time and paved the way for other black filmmakers to tell their stories.

In recent years, black short films have gained more recognition and awards. In 2017, “Get Out” became the first black horror film to be nominated for an Oscar. And in 2018, “Black Panther” made history as the first black superhero film to be nominated for an Academy Award.

These are just a few examples of the many achievements of black filmmakers. We are proud to showcase their work on JARO Media, and we hope that you will enjoy watching these films as much as we do.
