Sometimes, the best connections begin with plans that never work out.
That possibility drives Familiar Strangers, an eight-minute, six-second short film directed by Brandon Russel and produced by Bre Hassan that has been named an official finalist for the 2026 Peachtree Village International Film Festival (PVIFF).
Starring Hassan, Jeremy Tingle and Frederick Hurt, the film follows two strangers whose evening takes an unexpected turn when their respective dates fail to appear at a bar.
What begins as a shared experience of disappointment gradually develops into an evening of laughter, conversation and connection. But before the night ends, an unexpected revelation threatens to change everything they believe about their chance meeting.
The film joins this year’s PVIFF finalist lineup ahead of the festival’s Nov. 5-8 gathering in Atlanta.
When Disappointment Creates an Unexpected Opportunity
At the center of Familiar Strangers are two people who arrive at a bar anticipating an evening with someone else.
Instead, they find themselves facing the awkward reality of being stood up.
Their circumstances bring them into conversation, transforming what might otherwise have been an evening of frustration into an opportunity for connection.
As the two strangers begin sharing their experiences, their initial disappointment gives way to humor and an unexpected sense of familiarity.
The film’s premise examines how relationships can emerge from ordinary circumstances, particularly when expectations give way to possibilities neither person anticipated.
Yet the story is not simply about two individuals finding common ground.
A surprise before the evening concludes introduces another dimension to their encounter, raising questions about coincidence, personal assumptions and whether chance meetings are always what they appear to be.
Exploring the Unpredictability of Human Connection
One of the central themes of Familiar Strangers is the unpredictability of interpersonal relationships.
The film uses a recognizable social situation—a date who never arrives—as the foundation for a story about emotional openness, humor and unexpected companionship.
There is something relatable about the circumstances facing its central characters. Both begin the evening with expectations that are quickly disrupted, leaving them to decide whether disappointment will define the experience.
Their conversation offers an alternative.
Through laughter and shared understanding, the encounter develops into something neither planned.
The film’s closing surprise adds an element of intrigue, inviting audiences to reconsider the relationship between coincidence and the connections people form.
With a runtime of just over eight minutes, Familiar Strangers presents its story through a concentrated narrative built around conversation, shifting expectations and an unexpected turn.

PVIFF Finalists Compete Through Judging and Audience Engagement
The 2026 Peachtree Village International Film Festival is incorporating professional judging and audience participation into its finalist evaluation process.
Under the festival’s announced scoring structure, 70% of each finalist’s overall competition score will come from evaluations by judges representing PVIFF and JaroGO. The remaining 30% will be determined by audience engagement through the JaroGO streaming platform.
Participating finalist films are scheduled to be available on JaroGO during a limited competition viewing period, allowing audiences to watch, rate and comment on the selected productions.
The initiative is designed to provide independent filmmakers with additional visibility while extending the festival experience beyond traditional theatrical screenings.
JaroGO is available on iOS and Android in the United States and Canada.
