#WakandaTheVote: Activists Organized Voter Registration Drives at ‘Black Panther’ Screenings Across The Country
As part of the Electoral Justice Project initiative, three women utilized the highly attended opening weekend of ‘Black Panther’ as an opportunity to register citizens to vote.
With the opening weekend of Black Panther projected to reach groundbreaking heights, the Electoral Justice Project recognized a great opportunity to help get citizens registered to vote at screenings across the U.S.
Back in October, Kayla Reed, Rukia Lumumba, and Jessica Byrd founded the Electoral Justice Project (EJP), a mission by the Movement for Black Lives. Today, the three activists are encouraging others to vote at Black Panther screenings, through what they refer to as #WakandaTheVote.
“This weekend we wanted to meet our people in Wakanda. We know that for some it’s a superhero world, but we know that the world we deserve is still waiting to be built — and we want to build it,” Byrd and Reid told Blavity.
EJP’s initiative has already inspired over 1,000 people to join their launch call, and the campaign has also encouraged similar voter registration drives throughout the country. The activists explain that they have achieved success because they meet communities where they are, “whether that’s in the streets, at the city council meeting, or in the movie theater.”
