Singer-songwriter and actress Janelle Monáe has scored a role in the upcoming Gloria Steinem biopic titled The Glorias: A Life on the Road.
Deadline reports that Monáe will star as civil rights activist Dorothy Pitman Hughes, who co-founded Ms. Magazine with the widely recognized feminist Gloria Steinem. The role fits Monáe well, as she is a vocal activist for social justice and equal rights, which also shines through her music.
Based on Steinem’s 2015 memoir My Life on the Road, The Glorias will center on Steinem’s journey as an activist for equal rights, along with her pioneering work as a campaigner and journalist. Julie Taymor will direct the biopic, and Steinem herself along with Amy Richards will executive produce.
In 2016, Janelle Monáe made her movie debut in Barry Jenkin’s award-winning film Moonlight. She then starred in the critically acclaimed Hidden Figures alongside Taraji P. Henson and Octavia Spencer. The Glorias will mark her third role in film.
