If you haven’t read Ta-Nehisi Coates’ Between the World and Me, here’s a rare opportunity to see the Award-winning novel brought to life at the Apollo: Angela Bassett, Common, and This is Us star Susan Kelechi Watson will lead the first-ever staged reading of Between the World and Me at Harlem’s Apollo theater on April 2-3. Each night, different performers will take the stage. Michelle Wilson will join Bassett and Common on April 2nd, and Pauletta Washington will accompany Watson on April 3rd.

Considered one of the most imperative novels about race in America, Between the World and Me is written as a letter to Coates’ adolescent son about understanding what it means to be black in America. In the intimate and profound letter, the author addresses his personal experiences, our nation’s bruised history, and today’s crisis of wrongful murders and imprisonment in the black community.

Grammy-nominated jazz pianist and composer Jason Moran will provide music for the program, which will be managed by Apollo’s exec producer, Kamilah Forbes. Coates and Moran worked with Forbes to develop the project, which is set to include staged readings from Between the World and Me, visuals, and Moran’s compositions.
