SAN DIEGO – A concert by R&B singer Ashanti at SeaWorld San Diego became the backdrop for an animal welfare protest when a 49-foot yacht displaying PETA‘s “SeaWorld Kills” banner moved into view behind the Bayside Amphitheater stage.
Earlier in the day, PETA supporters gathered outside the park with signs directed at the performer and concertgoers. The demonstration urged attendees to consider the conditions in which dolphins and whales are kept at SeaWorld and to avoid supporting attractions that hold marine mammals in captivity.
The action was organized by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which has maintained a long-running campaign against SeaWorld’s marine mammal programs. Photos distributed by the organization showed the yacht positioned on the water behind the concert venue and protesters stationed near the park entrance.
A Concert Becomes a Protest Platform
PETA used the high-profile appearance to connect its broader campaign to Ashanti’s audience. Signs outside the venue included messages such as “Ashanti: No Dolphin Is Happy in a Tank” and “Ashanti: It’s Foolish to Support SeaWorld.”
“The real heartbreak isn’t in Ashanti’s lyrics, it’s in SeaWorld’s tanks where dolphins are drugged and sexually abused, mother orcas have had their babies taken away, and thinking, feeling animals waste away in concrete prisons,” PETA President Tracy Reiman said. “PETA urges everyone to help spare animals a life of misery by never going to SeaWorld.”

PETA Renews Calls for Seaside Sanctuaries
PETA said the protest was intended to highlight the contrast between the wide-ranging behavior of orcas and dolphins in the ocean and the restricted conditions of marine parks. The organization argues that confinement can contribute to stress, conflict, and injury among animals housed together.
The group also criticized SeaWorld’s breeding practices, describing procedures used in captive dolphin reproduction as invasive and inconsistent with natural behavior. PETA is calling on the company to end the breeding of dolphins and whales and move eligible animals to seaside sanctuaries, where they could live in larger, more natural environments while continuing to receive human care.
The protest reflects a wider debate over marine mammal entertainment, animal care standards and the future of parks that have historically relied on captive animal attractions. Advocates for sanctuary-based care say the model offers a compromise for animals that may not be able to return to the wild, while opponents of captivity continue to push for an end to breeding and public performances.
An Entertainment Event Draws a Broader Debate
By placing the banner in sight of the amphitheater and rallying at the entrance, PETA turned a summer concert into a public conversation about consumer choices and corporate animal-policy practices. The organization encouraged attendees and the wider public to reconsider visits to SeaWorld and other facilities that keep dolphins and whales in tanks.
The demonstration also placed Ashanti in the center of the campaign because of her scheduled performance, although the supplied release did not indicate that the singer was involved in SeaWorld’s animal programs or had issued a statement about the protest.
